20 Mar A Soothing Single-Family in Cambridge’s Strawberry Hill
Redesigned for the cofounder of Intelligentsia Coffee, this home by Fresh Pond is overflowing with lovely spots to sip your morning brew.
17 Vineyard St., Cambridge
Size: 3,100 square feet
Judging by the dark inky blue exterior of this Strawberry Hill single-family, you probably wouldn’t expect such a beautifully bright interior. But bright like the opposite of fluorescent—instead, a diffused glow permeates the whole home.
The vibe is akin to the trendy comfort you might feel in a really good coffee shop. Which is fitting, considering the space was redesigned specifically for the co-founder of Intelligentsia Coffee, Doug Zell. Consider the room where you’d likely sip most of your early morning espressos: Sunlight beams through two glass doors into the kitchen, where a copper linear suspension light gleams above the butcher block island and ceiling height cabinets are painted in the shade “black bean” (think: dark charcoal with a twinge of purple). In the corner, a wooden banquette matches the oak floors, though the cushioned seat and backing are upholstered in an aubergine-hued leather.
While warm white walls and rich furnishings dominate the design, there are a few fresh elements scattered throughout. Simple lines and a layering of textures is largely the name of the game, but one bathroom goes for a graphic, Morracan tile pattern all over the floors and back wall. Another bath opts for subway tiling and a minty green cabinet, with a round leather belt mirror above the sink. The accents only add to a scheme that feels laid-back, a little bit Victorian, and wholly enveloping. All considered, it’s a home that feels soothing even in the most uncertain of times.
